The Reality

A Crisis That
Demands Action

Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) remains one of South Africa's most urgent social crises. University students face sexual harassment, unsafe residences, nightlife violence, intimate partner abuse, and limited mental health support.

Young women aged 18–24 experience the highest vulnerability nationwide. This is not a statistic — it is a reality that plays out on campuses across KwaZulu-Natal every single day.

This programme unites MUT, DUT, and UKZN students in a youth-led response — because the generation that understands this crisis best must be the one to lead the change.

"Silence and neutrality in the face of injustice and gender-based violence only empower the perpetrators."

Programme Objectives

Four Goals.
One Mission.

Each objective is built around measurable outcomes — ensuring that every conversation, every run, and every partnership translates into lasting change for survivors and students across South Africa.

01
Ignite Awareness

Empower minds with comprehensive education on GBV prevention, consent, and mental wellness across all campuses — creating a generation that understands the issue deeply and acts accordingly.

02
Catalyze Youth Action

Unleash the power of youth through dynamic athletic activism — including the GBV Awareness Fun Run and vibrant community engagement events that turn awareness into physical, visible solidarity.

03
Fortify Support Networks

Forge unyielding inter-university GBV support systems and cultivate profound institutional collaboration — ensuring that no survivor navigates their journey alone, and that every campus has robust response structures.

04
Spark a Movement

Pioneer an enduring annual signature event that sparks a provincial youth movement dedicated to GBV prevention — with a vision to extend invitations to universities across South Africa, Africa, and globally.

Sustainability & Long-Term Impact

Built to Last

Beyond the three days, the GBVF Summit plants seeds of systemic change — with year-round programmes and long-term institutional commitments.

Year-Round Activities

Campus roadshows, men's dialogues, mental health workshops, peer support groups, and township outreach initiatives that keep the momentum alive all year.

Immediate Impact

Increased reporting awareness, GBV literacy, safety consciousness, and inter-university unity — measurable outcomes from the moment the event concludes.

Long-Term Change

Reduced GBV incidents, an annual provincial event, empowered communities, and strong survivor networks that outlast any single programme cycle.

Legal Representation & Justice

Partnering with legal firms to provide expert legal representation for victims in complex cases — ensuring justice is accessible to those who need it most.

Victim Mentorship Programme

Allocating dedicated mentors to support survivors through their healing journey — providing consistent, compassionate guidance from peer advocates and professionals.

Policy & Legislative Reform

Advocating for improved GBV policies and laws — working with government institutions to strengthen legal frameworks that protect students and survivors.

First Responder Training

Comprehensive trauma-informed training for police, medical staff, and campus security — equipping the first line of response to handle GBV cases with care and competence.

Institutional GBV Structures

Strengthening and standardising GBV response structures across all participating universities to ensure consistent, effective support is available to every student.

A Movement Begins

Beyond Borders.
Beyond 2026.

With the winning university earning hosting rights, students are motivated, institutions are invested, and the movement becomes self-sustaining. This marks the beginning of a transformative effort to create safer, united, and empowered student communities across the continent.

By extending invitations to universities across South Africa, Africa, and globally, the GBVF Summit and Marathon builds powerful international relations and strengthens partnerships in the fight against gender-based violence.
